Roy Freeman Club Championship

Saturday 30th July 2011

16 players entered the 2011 Roy Freeman Club Championship. The field consisted of six of the current first team, eight players from the Alliance side and two players in their first full seasons.

Dan Chilton made it to the final for the second season running and Chris Price also making it through to the final for the second time, but it was also 27 years since his last club championship final. It was a great advert for two different generations with 'Herman' now in his 33rd season for Broomfield aged 67 and Dan in his 5th season for the club aged 21.

Dan started strongly leading 8-3 and 13-8 bowling short marks. Chris then worked his way back into the match to lead 14-13. Dan hit back with a brace of 2's but Chris worked away to level at 17 across. From then on it was a classic championship final, 17-17, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20. Chris was the eventual winner and made his own piece of Broomfield history with 27 years between his championship wins (1984 & 2011). This broke Mark Hadley Snr's record which was set in 2007 (21 years between his wins in 1986 and 2007). When Chris Price last won the club championship he beat Roy Freeman in the final, we now play this competition in his memory and this September will mark 20 years since his untimely death.

The 16 players contested a competitive club championship, all games played in good spirits on a fine and sunny day. Celebrations followed as did tradition with the trophy filled not once but three times. Well done to everybody on a successful day.
